Susan L. Shackelford, Ph.D.

Dr. Susan Shackelford is a Clinical Psychologist who is passionate about evidence based treatment for those who struggle with mental health issues. She believes everyone struggles at some point in life and she actively assists patients in reducing the stigma of diagnosis and treatment. She is very compassionate and kind and uses anecdotes as well as humor, when needed, to put her patients at ease. Dr. Shackelford primarily engages in a cognitive behavioral approach to assist her patients in symptom relief and strives to return her patients to health and wellbeing. She takes a very collaborative approach to care. 

She enjoys working with those who struggle with anxiety, depression, grief, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, eating disorders, adjustment disorders, as well as other mental health symptoms. She has training in Imago Relationship Therapy and enjoys her work with couples, those with family of origin issues, as well as those who have difficulties related to transitioning through seasons of life. She enjoys working with student athletes to enhance their performance in their sport. 

Dr. Shackelford completed her undergraduate degree at Trinity University in San Antonio, where she majored in Psychology and minored in Sociology and Business Administration. She received her doctorate from Texas A&M University in Psychology in 1991 and was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at LSU prior to returning to school for additional training in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Shackelford completed post doctorate specialization in Clinical Psychology at the University of Tulsa and completed her internship at Tulane University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Neurology, in New Orleans. Dr. Shackelford worked in the outpatient clinic with children, adolescents, and adults. She enjoyed treating more severe patients who were hospitalized at Charity Hospital in New Orleans as well. In addition, she received training triaging patients who were brought into the Emergency Department at Charity Hospital.  

Dr. Shackelford lives in Fayetteville with her husband. She has three sons who are enjoying life and return home for occasional outdoor adventures. She loves to travel and grew up an Air Force ‘brat’ overseas. She loves the outdoors and animals of all kind.
