Grief Counseling in Northwest Arkansas

Grief and Loss Counseling

Grief can feel overwhelming, confusing, and deeply personal. You do not have to navigate it alone. At Psychology & Counseling Associates, we offer compassionate grief counseling in Northwest Arkansas (NWA), serving individuals in Fayetteville, Rogers, and surrounding communities. Whether your loss is recent or long past, we provide a safe, supportive space to help you process your pain and begin healing at your own pace.

You Are Not Alone in Your Grief

Grief is a natural response to loss. It can affect you emotionally, physically, and mentally in ways that feel unexpected or overwhelming.

For many people, coping with loss feels like moving through unfamiliar territory without a map. But everyone grieves differently. Your personality, culture, beliefs, past experiences, and the nature of the loss you’ve experienced all shape how grief unfolds. There is no “right” timeline and no single way it should look.

You may feel intense emotions one week and a sense of calm the next, only for difficult feelings to return later. The length of the grieving process also varies. Some people begin to adjust over time, while others may experience grief that feels persistent or difficult to manage.

Types of Loss That Can Lead to Symptoms of Grief

While many associate grief with the death of a loved one, loss can also include the end of a relationship, divorce, miscarriage, major life transitions, anticipatory grief, or traumatic events. Each type of loss carries its own emotional weight.
You may experience symptoms of grief, such as:

  • Deep sadness
  • Anger
  • Guilt
  • Numbness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Changes in sleep
  • Physical fatigue

At Psychology & Counseling Associates, we provide grief counseling in Northwest Arkansas to help individuals process their experiences. Healing doesn’t mean forgetting what happened. We just help you find new, more manageable ways to carry your loss forward.

Understanding the Five Stages of Grief

You may have heard of the five stages of grief. It’s a model developed to help explain common emotional responses to loss. While this framework can provide helpful insight, grief does not follow a predictable or orderly sequence. Instead, people often move through these experiences:

  • Denial: difficulty accepting the reality of the loss
  • Anger: feelings of frustration, resentment, or injustice
  • Bargaining: dwelling on “what if” or “if only” thoughts
  • Depression: deep sadness, withdrawal, or emotional heaviness
  • Acceptance: gradually adjusting to the reality of the loss

Many individuals move back and forth between stages rather than progressing step by step. You may experience several emotions at once or revisit certain feelings over time. Some people encounter only a few of these stages, while others experience all of them.

Is Grief Counseling Right for You?

  • Difficulty functioning at work, school, or home
    Sleep problems or ongoing fatigue
  • Withdrawal from family, friends, or activities you once enjoyed
  • Symptoms of anxiety or depression
  • Feeling “stuck” in your grief or unable to move forward

If your distress feels urgent or you are experiencing thoughts of harming yourself, immediate support is available. You can find crisis support options on our crisis resources page.

REAL PATIENTS

Scott E.
Dawn Martin is an amazing and patient therapist. She agreed to accept me as her patient and allow my then wife to join a few sessions to work on communications. My now ex-wife was so disrespectful not only to me, but to Dawn that she had to ban my ex-wife from the building but agreed to keep seeing me. I was in an emotionally, mentally, verbally and physically abusive marriage (yes, women do those things too), and the only one who ever witnessed and believes that part of my ex-wife is Dawn. She has been so supportive throughout this entire ordeal and helped me realize that I’m not actually in the twilight zone.

I love this place, love the people, and will continue to come here for years to come.

I am a patient of Dr. Chapman and highly recommend her for medication services. She has given me excellent care and has helped my mental health tremendously with her expertise. I am so thankful to meet with her and have her guidance on treatment! She is very personable and thorough, I feel that I am in very good hands with her.

I've been seeing Kathy Jordan for years and she has been an amazing therapist to say the least. I can confidently say her treatment has altered thr course of my life for the better!
Chelsea L.N.
I have been seeing Dr. Chapman forever and I just think she is very competent and knowledgeable about her practice. I have also seen a few therapists in the office. Matt at the Rogers location was incredible, but then I tried to switch to a woman - I don’t remember her name, and she said one of the most offensive and upsetting things she could have possibly said. I’m still giving this place 5 stars though because I do really like Dr. Chapman. She always tries hard to get me the right medications despite my insurance being a huge pain. And because my former therapist Matt was one of the best therapists I’ve had.
Hailey B.
I’ve been going here for about 5 years, and it’s been a tremendous hand in helping me navigate my life mentally. Knowledgeable staff and comforting environment
